Arns Commission meets with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)

The Arns Commission held an online bilateral meeting today (July 14) with the Mexican commissioner Joel Hernández García, rapporteur for Brazil and president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The purpose of the meeting was to address the human rights situation under Jair Bolsonaro's administration and its worsening with the COVID-19 crisis.

Four founding members of the Arns Commission participated in the meeting: José Vicente, dean of the Zumbi dos Palmares University and founding president of the Afro-Brazilian Society of Socio-Cultural Development (Sociedade Afrobrasileira de Desenvolvimento Sócio Cultural – Afrobras, in Portuguese); Manoela Carneiro da Cunha, anthropologist and former president of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology; Maria Herminia Tavares de Almeida, political scientist and former president of the Brazilian Political Science Association and of the Latin American Studies Association; Maria Victoria de Mesquita Benevides, sociologist and political scientist, a former member of the Council of the Municipal Secretariat for Human Rights and Citizenship.
