In its first joint public act, the Arns Commission took to the streets during the demonstration on October 2nd in defense of democracy and human rights. The founding members, supporters, and collaborators of the Commission gathered in front of the Conjunto Nacional holding a banner and marking their presence with shouts of “Long live Dom Paulo! Long live democracy!”

Margarida Genevois, 98, honorary president of the Arns Commission made sure to be present at the act. President José Carlos Dias and founding members Belisário dos Santos Jr., Laura Greenhalgh, Maria Hermínia Tavares de Almeida, Oscar Vilhena Vieira, and Paulo Vannuchi, in addition to supporting members, also participated.

After the act, the Commission walked along Paulista Avenue to the sound truck, in front of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), where José Carlos Dias spoke the following: “Almost 40 years ago, people from different political lines, Ulisses Guimarães, Tancredo Neves, Franco Montoro, Lula, and many others were united in the hope of re-democratizing Brazil. Today, we experience here a demonstration that is not as large as the Diretas Já (Direct [Elections] Now) movement. But we are here because Brazil is ravaged, misery is everywhere, death is everywhere... when we see this country in mourning for so many people lost, we have to transform this mourning into a fight!
