The Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns Commission for the Defense of Human Rights – the Arns Commission – goes public to express its deepest repudiation regarding the cowardly assaults and attacks that have been directed at the Federal Supreme Court, its members, and their family members.

These attacks have the sole purpose of undermining the Court's ability to fully and autonomously exercise the function of safeguarding the Constitution, which was expressly assigned to it by Article 102 of our Brazilian Constitution.

Sordid attacks, undue interferences, and violations against the independence of the justice system have become common characteristics of autocratic escalation in several parts of the world. The Supreme Courts and Constitutional Courts, due to their centrality in the protection system of the Constitution, have been the priority targets of these attacks.

It is certainly in reaction to the haughty position assumed by this Federal Supreme Court in the uncompromising defense of fundamental rights and democratic values that sectors hostile to our Constitution have launched this cowardly campaign against the Court.

We thus express our widest solidarity to all the members of this distinguished Court, as well as our full support to the Court so that it can, with complete independence and without any constraints, continue to exercise its function of safeguarding our Constitution.
