"Although the criminalization of torture is provided for by law, torture continues as a practice in Brazilian police institutions." - Paulo Lugon, assessor internacional da Comissão Arns

The people must not pay with their own lives!

We, the signatory entities of the Pact for Life and for Brazil, under the weight of sorrow and with a sense of utmost urgency, address Brazilian society once again, in light of the worsening of the pandemic and its consequences. Our first word is one of solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones.

There is no time to lose, negationism kills. The virus is spreading from north to south of Brazil, replicating variants, affecting different age groups, a punishing the most vulnerable. Patients die in agony due to the lack of hospital resources. The Unified Health System – SUS continues to save lives. However, health professionals, after a year on the front lines, are on the verge of burnout. To them, we offer our gratitude and appreciation.

It is time to stop the escalation of death! The Brazilian population needs a vaccine now. The virus will not go away through obscurantism, angry speeches, or offensive statements. Enough of this foolishness and irresponsibility. In addition to the need for a vaccine now and for everyone, Brazil urgently needs the Ministry of Health to fulfill its role as an effective fomenter of health policies at a national level, ensuring quick access to medication and tests that are endorsed by science, the constant traceability of the virus, and a minimum of peace to the people.

The inefficiency of the Federal Government, primarily responsible for the tragedy we are living through, is notorious. Governors and mayors cannot assume the role of accomplices of this total disregard for life. Thus, we support their efforts to ensure compliance with the list of sanitary protection measures, in parallel to the rapid and consistent immunization of the population. May governors and mayors act with eyes not only on their states and municipalities but on the whole country, through a great pact. We are one single Brazil.

We urge the National Congress to give top priority to matters related to the fight against COVID-19, since preserving lives is the most urgent job. In this sense, the dignified emergency aid with the provision of stimulus checks, and for as long as necessary, will be indispensable to save lives and boost the economy. To the Judiciary branch, under the leadership of the Federal Supreme Court, we request that it must look after the rights of citizens and the harmony among the federative entities. May the press act freely, vigorously, and ethically, fulfilling its mission to transmit reliable and scientifically based information about what is going on in our country. Finally, may the voice of the institutions sound very strong in defense of the Brazilian people!

We also make a special appeal to the youth. The virus is infecting and killing the young and healthy, using them as vectors of transmission. Let the Brazilian youth assume their historical protagonism in defense of life and of our country, unraveling the negationism that promotes death.

We know that the path is challenging, the opportunity to rebuild Brazilian society is unparalleled, and hope is the light that will guide us towards a new era.
