"Although the criminalization of torture is provided for by law, torture continues as a practice in Brazilian police institutions." - Paulo Lugon, assessor internacional da Comissão Arns

Public Note #4 – In deference to the right to memory and truth

The Arns Commission for Human Rights firmly rejects the offensive and derisive words from His Excellency, Mr. President of the Republic, to Felipe Santa Cruz, president of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil – OAB, in Portuguese) and to all the family members of those who died and disappeared during the 1964 military regime. The President’s words belittle the position he holds, ignore the relevant role of the OAB in Brazil’s re-democratization process, and contradict truths established by the Brazilian State itself, in a democratic period.

It is an urgent moment for solving the problem of increasing unemployment rates, rebuilding the economy, and strengthening democratic freedoms, without hate speech and statements/words that only divide and destroy.
