The Arns Commission demands the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro investigate a crime of racism
The Arns Commission sent, on August 11, 2020, an official letter to the assistant prosecutor for criminal affairs and human rights of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Ribeiro Martins. In the document, the Commission requests “that the episode of racism aggravated by assault against the delivery man Matheus Fernandes, which occurred on August 6th, 2020, at the Ilha Plaza shopping mall, in Governador Island, in the northern zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, be duly followed up and investigated.”

Arns Commission demands investigation and measures to be taken on police violence in the state of São Paulo
In an official letter sent to the São Paulo State Secretariat of Public Security, on July 23rd, the Arns Commission requested measures to investigate and deal with several cases of police violence that occurred in the last two months in the state, as reported in the press.

We demand that the Minister of Justice goes public to explain himself about the news, denying it if false, being forbidden to use the argument of “secrecy”, which is a legal mechanism to protect democracy and society, and not to cover up insidious actions against the Rule of Law and those who defend it.

Public Note #21 – In repudiation of the constitutional loophole and the attacks against Indigenous people
It is essential and urgent that the precautionary measure and the merits of Extraordinary Appeal (Recurso Extraordinário – RE, in Portuguese) No. 1 017 365 must be taken to the plenary, so that the aberration that is the “time frame” theory is finally overturned. We appeal to the President of the Supreme Court to address this matter with due urgency.

Arns Commission meets with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)
The Arns Commission held an online bilateral meeting today (July 14) with the Mexican commissioner Joel Hernández García, rapporteur for Brazil and president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The purpose of the meeting was to address the human rights situation under Jair Bolsonaro's administration and its worsening with the COVID-19 crisis.

Joint note on the Brazilian government’s statement at the UN Human Rights Council
The Arns Commission and Conectas, remote participants of the 44th session of the UN Human Rights Council, express their perplexity and disagreement with the statements made by the Brazilian government in Geneva. After the statement of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, expressing her concern with countries that deny the seriousness of the new coronavirus by citing Brazil, Burundi, Nicaragua, Tanzania, and the United States, the Brazilian delegation took the floor twice to defend what today, in our judgment, is indefensible.

The Arns Commission sends an official letter to the National Council of Justice demanding COVID-19 preventive measures in prisons
The Arns Commission has supported the Institute for Defense of the Right to Defense (IDDD) in a request to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) so that provisional, sexagenarian, and chronically ill prisoners who have not committed serious crimes can serve their sentences in home detention or wait for their trial out of custody in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 in prisons.

The Arns Commission demands urgent measures from Moro to protect Indigenous lands
Faced with the possibility of a catastrophic death toll among Indigenous peoples, and even the extinction of some groups, the Arns Commission demands that the Ministry of Justice and Public Security mobilize its Security Forces to prevent the invasion of Indigenous lands and to expel, in accordance with the law, invaders from all such lands, as well as from areas interdicted for the protection of isolated peoples.

Pact for Life and for Brazil
For the first time in Brazil’s history, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns Commission for the Defense of Human Rights (Arns Commission), the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the Brazilian Press Association (ABI), and the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) have united around a Pact for Life and for Brazil, in the duty to alert and represent Brazilian civil society. The organizations have joined forces to call for the union of the entire Brazilian society, all its citizens, governments, and powers of the Republic, and form a broad alliance to face the serious health, economic, social, and political crises that the country is experiencing.

Organizations call for UN investigation for praises to the military coup
On April 1st, the Arns Commission, the Brazilian Bar Association, and the Vladimir Herzog Institute, among other organizations, sent a petition to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), requesting that Brazilian authorities be investigated for commemoration and acclaim of the military coup of 1964.
